Some Spiritual/Worldview Background
I tend toward the Zen notion that one can't and needn't describe the world as it is; embedded as we are in whatever this all is, any expression is partial, incomplete, and poses the risk of congealing as a concept and thereby obstructing our view of the thing itself.
Many symbol-sets and bodies of teaching can serve as a means of engagement or reconnection (re-ligion) with experience/phenomena, on the individual level. In that context, many religions and beliefs are 'true' enough. All are just as open to misuse, or use to ends other than clear seeing and right action. Very often one sees teachings, culled selectively from one or several traditions, used to avoid reality, prop up ego, and maintain mindstates ranging from righteous certitude to vague well-being.
I find the work of the historical Buddha and his lineages both the most useful and the most resistant to misuse, though it's by no means foolproof. I find monotheism prone to often deadly misuse, particularly paired with an apocalypse meme. The notion of a "soul," likewise, limits people more than it frees them, in my experience.
Dwelling on categories and labels accomplishes little, in any case. I 'am' not; I'm being.
